Misrepresenting The Holy Spirit VIII: Stand Up For Jesus Christ!

March 21, 2013

Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech,

“How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? (Proverbs 1:20)

So what about healings?  How do they fit into the practice of misrepresenting the Holy Spirit (MHS)? Healings are definitely real and have always been happening. The ones done by GOD are incredibly rare, and when God does them, He doesn’t share His glory with people. God doesn’t heal people through people. Muddying the waters even more are the fake healings and the healings done by the devil. The fake healings are pretty easy to spot. The ones done by the devil are very deceiving just like everything he’s involved in. All works of the devil are meant to counterfeit or copy the works of GOD.  They all make you feel good and fulfilled in the short term only. Remember God’s not the only one with supernatural powers.

The way you can tell the difference between a healing by GOD, and a healing by the devil, is how it happens and who gets the glory. The example of the exorcisms in the catholic church can serve as a parallel for healings. So lets look at how the catholic exorcisms are done. They’re done through ritual, through human works, and they’re done through the church by the church.  They have nothing to do with GOD.

The only way to be healed by GOD is the same way we’re saved, and that’s by putting your trust in Jesus Christ. And not just any level of trust, trust strong enough to believe that He can pull off the miracle we’re asking Him to perform.

In the same way the catholic church makes it about them, the fake healers out there always make the healing about who was present, what they did, where they did it, how they did it. They do this because if they’re not an integral part of it, what good are they? They’re no good at all!

Lets look at who gets the glory for most healings today. We’ll go back to our catholic church example. It’s pretty easy to see who gets the glory there, it’s the catholic church, even they’ll tell you without them you’re going to hell, not only in the case of exorcisms, but all the way around. They’ll explain, you don’t need GOD or the Bible; you need Mary, the priest, the bishop, the cardinal, the pope and the catholic church.

With healings you’ll notice the people involved again are the center of attention. They’ll say things like; “you won’t believe what we did”, “I’m so special”, “here are the other people what were there, ask them.” The devil doesn’t care who gets the credit as long as it’s not GOD. Again these people have to get the glory or what good are they? Someone being healed is completely based on that person’s faith in Jesus Christ, it has nothing to do with the people or what actions they take.

Finally we’ll talk about the most common egregious form of MHS, the people who claim to speak in tongues. This is another horrible example of heretics hurting the Kingdom of GOD and destroying people’s relationships with GOD. Since I’ve already touched on this, I’m not going to spend much more time on it, because  even if the gift hadn’t ceased, the real Apostle Paul is overtly clear on this subject.

I’ll just list a few of Paul’s own words:

-“But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. (1 Corinthians 14:19)

If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. (1 Corinthians 14:27-28)

Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? (1 Corinthians 14:6)

You can read more scripture about tongues that is even more direct at the bottom of this post.

So what can we learn from Paul? In the first verse he’s pretty much saying tongues are useless unless they perform a purpose. In the second, he’s telling us to shut up unless we speak one at a time and have an interpreter. He says nothing about it being ok to interrupt church or any gathering as long as you’re just speaking your tongue out loud to GOD. And in the final verse he’s telling us to shut up again unless our tongue is of some use. And all of this is moot today because as you read in the previous post the gift of tongues has ceased.

EDIT: Since the writing of this it’s become clear that the tongue that I thought I had (explained in the following three paragraphs) was really just the devil playing on my human need to be different, to be exalted, to be special. He was hoping I’d publicly use my tongue, that I’d go around telling everyone about it. He hoped all of this because he knew it would destroy my witness for Christ. it would destroy my credibility with other Christians and most of all would steal God’s glory and put it all on my new found “gift”.

I’m so happy that God put me through the following three paragraphs because it’s a perfect example of how the devil can use a born again Christian’s pride, ego and need for significance to deceive them and drive them into a life filled with unintentional heresy.  P.S as you can see below my wife’s spirit knew exactly what was happening and I’m so grateful to God for her.

The fact is I have my own tongue. I was driving down the street after my mom had been humming “Killing Me Softly” all day before I dropped her off.  I decided I wanted to hear the real thing, not only because she was humming it, but also because I’ve always liked that song. So I found it on iTunes and when the song came on I started singing along as I do with all music. All of the sudden words started coming out of my mouth I’d never spoken before. Words I couldn’t understand and didn’t seem to be from any language I’d ever heard. After being totally shocked for a few minutes, I decided to video record myself singing this way just in case it went away. I did just that, and after watching it, even though it was a beautiful sounding language, I had no idea what was going on.

When I got home I told Tara what happened. She didn’t take it well; initially she was angry because she hates fake and deceptive practices more then I do. But after talking for a bit and hearing the tongue she no longer thought it was fake, she simply didn’t understand what was happening and either did I. So I mustered up enough confidence to show my pastor the video and talk to him about it. I was really embarrassed but he put me at ease and told me there are two different types of tongues and one of them is used between a person and GOD only in private, and the other is very rare and can only be used in as the Bible describes. He said if I didn’t know what I was saying and it wasn’t a real language and it couldn’t be interpreted that it was probably my own personal language with GOD.

I now believe this to be the case, but before I knew what was going on, my Spirit always strongly told me that using my tongue out loud anywhere was not right. That God is a GOD of order, clarity, logic and rational behavior, not a GOD of interruption, confusion and bringing attention to ones self. As Paul says; “For GOD is not a GOD of disorder but of peace. As in all congregations of the saints. “(1 Corinthians 14:33). And unlike the catholic church teaches, the Bible makes it clear that all Born Again Christians are the Saints.

So who’s to blame for all of this? Is it the pastors, the perpetrators, the con artists, the devil? No, it’s Christians themselves who hold all of the blame for these types of behaviors existing. For the Insecurity Crew, Christians are the perpetrators and feel compelled to do these things because of their own insecurity. Which is a result of their distance from GOD and a lack of understanding of the Bible.

Christians are not only the perpetrators in regards to MHS, but they are the ones who allow it to continue. They’re the enablers who don’t stand up for the GOD they say they love.  We as Christians should never sit back as these types of behaviors take place. Again I think we should follow Paul’s advice as he says I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.” (Romans 16:17-18)

Don’t ever act nonchalantly when you here someone referring to themselves as an apostle, prophet, or claim to be prophesying, or appear to be speaking in tongues as is common these days. There is absolutely nothing nonchalant about it. You should aggressively rebuke them, mark them and call them out everywhere they go as the Bible instructs us to do.

I know this is long but I’m not writing this to grow my readership, I’m writing this to help people that I care about heal their hearts, recognize their sins and repent of them so they can feel the full warmth and love of GOD again. There has been a lot of narrow casting in this article in the hopes that the people reading it will take notice and open their heart to GOD so He can show them the error of their ways.

I’ll leave you now with a couple of human quotes and one quote from Jesus Christ Himself.

The first quote is from Dr. William Layne Craig, “Doctrine without the Sprit leads to orthodoxy. Spirit without doctrine leads to fanaticism.” The first part describes the catholic church and religion in general. And fanaticism is exactly what creates MHS in people’s lives because they don’t understand doctrine.

The second is from Dallas Willard, “’Spirituality’ wrongly understood or pursued is a major source of human misery and rebellion against GOD.”

And the final quote is from Jesus Christ Himself. Something tells me He didn’t waste many words in His day, which also leads me to believe He meant this for a specific group of people, and I think that group of people has been thoroughly described in this article.

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.  By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?  Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.  A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.  Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.  Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  Many will say to me on that day,‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’  Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matthew 7, 15-23)

I’m confused, are you saying it IS moot and ceased, or that it still exists, but only to be between the receiver and God? By the article, I read it has stopped, it was from Satan, and it was real, but not meant to be shared…?

    • Hi Felicity,

Can you be a little more specific? Is what moot or ceased? I’ll the best I can to answer your question.
