Misrepresenting the Holy Spirit V: Angels, Demons and Control.

February 21, 2013

Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech,

“How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? (Proverbs 1:20)

Read Part 4 here…

So lets jump right into some of the more common cases of misrepresenting the Holy Spirit (MHS) involving the Heretical Crew. These include, falsely telling people GOD has put something on their heart, or that GOD told them to tell someone something when it’s not the case, lying about hearing an audible voice from GOD, saying they saw angels or demons, and/or exaggerating or lying about supernatural occurrences.

As I said before the base reasons for all MHS is for attention and because of insecurity in their relationship with GOD.

However a few new things come into play for the Heretical Crew at this point, these are control and influence.  When people falsely say that “GOD put something on their heart” or “GOD told me to tell you something” what they’re really saying is, “I’m right”, “do what I say”, “trust me”, “I have a relationship with GOD that’s amazing and better than yours” etc… They’re trying to influence you; it’s a control thing. Control is the main indication that someone is insecure along with defensive behavior. Don’t disguise your will for people as the Spirit!

Now GOD has put things on my heart many times, but He’s never blatantly told me to tell someone something.  While I know it’s possible, if someone says this to you your antennas should go up. What’s their motivation? Does it sound like something GOD would tell you? How would your actions impact that person? Remember even if what they tell you seems to clear those hurdles, they could still be trying to exaggerate their relationship with GOD.

Then there are the people who claim to have heard an audible voice from GOD. The first thing I want to say here is that I’m convinced this happens.  Even though I’ve never heard one, and the founding head pastor of Willow Creek claims he’s never heard one in forty years, I’m very confident this happens. But I’m also convinced it’s exceedingly rare. If someone tells you this you should be very cautious.

Next you have the people who claim to have seen demons and/or angels and exaggerate and lie about super natural occurrences. This can include someone claiming to see angels in their house, a leopard jumping through the window of a car in front of them and coming out the other side at sixty miles an hour, seeing demons all over the place, the heavens opening up in front of them, etc…

While all of these things are also theoretically possible since anything is possible with GOD, you should be very concerned for the person’s well being if they tell you anything like this.  The truth is the Bible is our reference for all things pertaining to GOD.  And what we find in the Bible regarding angels is they only manifest themselves for very important specific purposes, usually to deliver a message of supreme importance directly from GOD.

Much of what applies to angels also applies to demons. I can safely say that outside of witchcraft, seeing demons doesn’t just happen. As is the case with angels, they would never just show up for no reason, to scare people. Many people that claim to have seen these sorts of things could’ve very well seen something but it was nothing more than the devil deceiving them, so they would tell others and ruin their credibility moving forward. The majority of these events happen when people are in an altered state of mind, which is where the devil works best.

If people are seeing angels, it will dramatically affect their life the same way it did the people in the Bible. It won’t be some passing fairy tale at the dinner table. They’ll have come for a major reason and that reason will be evident in that person’s life ongoing.  Look at the people GOD chose to send angels to in the Bible and what affects it had on the person and the world. Seeing angels is an incredibly rare monumental event that should be shouted from the rooftops, the news should be called and the churches should be made aware.

Again all of these things hurt The Kingdom because the people who aren’t experiencing these things will wonder why. Why has GOD supposedly chosen you? Why is GOD talking through you? What’s wrong with me? You’re magic show is making Christians question their faith while the lost feel more comfortable in their ignorance because even they can smell your deception.

The reality is none of those things are happening to you and people can tell by the way you talk about it. The way you make it all about you and your experiences, instead of praising GOD for what He’s done. By the way you struggle to get through life as GOD rains His discipline down on you..  And the irony is, the same things you boast about in GOD are the same things that have caused Him to withdraw from you!

Continue to Part 6…

   Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults;

     whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.

    Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you;

     rebuke the wise and they will love you.

   Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still;

     teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

  (Proverbs 9:7-9)
