Misrepresenting the Holy Spirit (MHS)

January 31, 2013

Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech,

“How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? (Proverbs 1:20)

Hello All,

I’m writing you today to talk about something that’s been on my heart since I was an anti-atheist, before I even knew Jesus Christ to be GOD. It’s one of the many things that Christians allow and practice that kept me comfortable in my ignorance. Something that does extensive damage to the Kingdom of GOD and disgusts me beyond words.  Something that disturbingly almost every “Christian” I know has been guilty of in one form or another either knowingly or unknowingly.

I call it misrepresenting the Holy Spirit (MHS). My definition of MHS is; “Anytime a person does something outside of what the Holy Spirit is prompting, calling or moving a person to do, while making it appear as the work of the Holy Spirit.” This can range from little but no less destructive things, to big things.

Some examples of small things include, bringing extra attention to your self at church, either on stage or in the audience, conspicuously carrying a Bible without reason, wearing a crucifix/idol around your neck, being overly religious in your talk or actions, volunteering and donating money in the name of GOD when it’s not the result of the Spirit and only serves to sooth your conscious, and/or exaggerating anything related to GOD in any way at any time.  We’ll call the people who do this the “Insecurity Crew”.

Examples of larger more heretic examples are prophesying, speaking in tongues, healings, telling people GOD has put something on your heart or that GOD told you to tell them something when it’s not the case, speaking for GOD or speaking into people’s lives as if GOD is speaking through you, calling yourself an apostle, inappropriately calling yourself a pastor, lying about hearing an audible voice from GOD, saying you saw angels or demons, and/or exaggerating or lying about supernatural occurrences. We’ll call these people the “Heretical Crew”

Not everyone doing some of these things are outside of the Spirit, but I can assure you that it’s obvious to Christians and non-Christians alike when they are. If the Holy Spirit is moving you to do some of these things, that’s awesome, if not, you have allowed the devil to deceive you and play on your insecurities and need for attention in order to become complicit in destroying GOD’S Kingdom.

I say some of these things because there’s no doubt about the differing degrees of harm, motives and personal awareness of misrepresenting the Holy Spirit (MHS). I hope to break down the different levels for you, explain why people do these things, the affects they have on the individuals perpetrating the con, and why they’re so damaging to the Kingdom of GOD.

There will be a lot of narrow casting in the following posts in this article and it’s being done in the hopes that the people I care about will repent and change their lives so that they can experience the full love and warmth GOD has in store for them.

   Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults;

     whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.

    Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you;

     rebuke the wise and they will love you

   Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still;

     teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

  (Proverbs 9:7-9)
